If you have been following coverage of the Atlantic Coast Pipeline, you might think everyone and their mother is against it. Stories regularly contain multiple quotes from protestors but rarely any from supporters beyond Dominion representatives. But alas, there are plenty of supporters of this project, including landowners. I have attended events where supporters have numbered over 50 people, while there were many who could not attend for one reason or another.

Some may ask, why are we not as vocal?

While we live in a country where disagreement and open dialogue is generally welcomed, when it comes to the Atlantic Coast Pipeline and similar projects across the country, supporters are often verbally attacked as “climate deniers” and companies building the projects are accused of only being in it for the profit.

Many supporters understand the risks associated with projects of this scale, but instead see that the many benefits far outweigh the potential negatives. Supporters of the Atlantic Coast Pipeline are excited for the reliable, cheap and energy independence provided by project. Supporters also realize coal is no longer the best choice for providing energy, and natural gas is a cleaner, cheaper replacement that produces 50 percent less carbon emissions.

Supporters also love the beauty of the valley and Virginia as a whole, but do not want it tarnished with thousands of acres of solar panels and hundreds of wind turbines. An underground pipeline will maintain Virginia’s natural beauty while providing a multitude of addition benefits. Supporters are real, and protesters should remember that we vote too.

The best thing about America is that we live in a system where you have the right to express your opinion and still live peacefully with your neighbor who may be contrary to that opinion.
