Dear Editor:
I am pleased with the decision by FERC to approve the Atlantic Coast Pipeline, and I hope to see the state agencies coordinating on the project work to grant final permits soon. The fact of the matter is that this project, while larger than some other pipelines in Virginia, will not bring unprecedented destruction to our area and state. Infrastructure projects like this are necessary if we want to remain competitive both domestically and internationally in the 21st century. Pipelines like the ACP are safe and largely go unnoticed, something most other development is unable to do. The engineers and workers who are designing and will build this project are some of the best-trained and experienced workers you will find anywhere, regardless of the type of project. Pipelines must meet rigorous quality and environmental standards and must receive hundreds of different permits and approvals. In fact, the order of approval itself lists several dozen conditions this project must meet before, during and after construction. Failure to meet many of these standards would bring construction to a halt, something no one involved on this project wants. Inspectors are also highly trained and well certified, and multiple agencies will review and monitor this project every step of the way. The ACP cannot violate the conditions of its permit without severe consequences, which would be detrimental to the project as a whole. The federal review process is set up to ensure projects like this are built safely and in a way that mitigates impacts on the environment. The order given by FERC is an exciting development for Virginia, and I am proud to be a supporter.
