I am writing in support of the Atlantic Coast Pipeline and to urge the Virginia Marine Resources Commission to give authorization for the project.
Over the past three years, the ACP has sought review and input by various federal, state, and local agencies, as well as hundreds of individuals with a stake in the project. The ACP project team has provided more than 100,000 pages of reports and documentation about everything from construction procedures to water safety—and much more.
The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and many other agencies have carefully analyzed potential impacts to the land, air and water quality, wildlife, and other resources. This extensive review process has ensured that the ACP is the safest way to get affordable, cleaner natural gas to those in our region who desperately need it.
Because of this exhaustive process, I believe the ACP can and will safely cross Virginia’s streams and rivers. The project team has consulted water and terrain experts, evaluated thousands of miles of potential routes, and made hundreds of route adjustments to avoid environmentally sensitive areas. Through regulating upland areas, the team has added an additional level of review, and is using best-in-class methods in areas with karst or steep slopes. When it comes to streams and rivers, the ACP project team has reviewed each crossing to ensure the chosen construction method is appropriate given the site-specific characteristics of that stream.
I believe the ACP can be built safely, and so I see no reason for Virginia to miss out on the vast economic benefits this pipeline will provide: thousands of jobs, millions of dollars in tax revenue and a boost to the entire Virginia economy.
I ask that you approve the Atlantic Coast Pipeline.
