If you believe many of its critics, the proposed Atlantic Coast Pipeline will despoil both nature’s beauty and the bucolic towns nestled within it — killing off rare species, ruining scenic vistas, putting countless lives in peril, razing mountains, and so forth. It would endanger “clean drinking water (for) millions” and “world-class fishing,” according to some. It would “desecrate cultural, historic and environmental resources,” say others. Still others claim “the pipeline is ripping through the heart of Virginia — our mountains, streams, fields and forests. It will destroy habitats and financially cripple small farmers.”

This is important if true, as the fellow said. But is it true?

Not likely. Thousands upon thousands of miles of gas pipelines already crisscross the state. And hardly anybody ever notices. Below, we present a few photographs showing various places around Virginia where gas pipelines (primarily 20” transmission lines) run underground — just as the ACP would. They look like pretty nice places, don’t they?

The locations of the buried gas piplines are indicated by the small pipes sticking out of the ground (you might have to squint to see some of them).
